100NO 580: Urgency Culture: Real or Not Real?
Monday May 13, 2024
Monday May 13, 2024
Many years ago, Greg McKeown introduced us to the humble brag, but has the humble brag (we spoke about this on episodes 68 and 378) now found itself an older cousin called Urgency Culture?
Do you find yourself unable to say NO just in case a better offer pops up and then find yourself over-committed and overwhelmed?
Do you preface your answers to “How are you?” with ‘I’m busy!”.
Do you drop what you are doing every time a message or a call comes through?
Do you find yourself checking your phone and social media at every opportunity, just in case you miss out on something happening in the world around you?
A sense of urgency can look very different from one person to another, but following on from a recent National Geographic article about responding immediately to texts, is it time to pause and find ways to counteract this urgency culture?
In an increasingly connected world, urgency culture blurs the line between what is urgent and what is important. The Eisenhower Matrix is a great starting point as to how you can decipher between what is urgent and what is important.
In this discussion, Damo and Marcus share some suggestions as to how you can find the time in your life to slow down and help move yourself towards a parasympathetic state of mind, rest, digest and repair.

100NO 579: Alcohol - Vice or Villain?
Monday May 06, 2024
Monday May 06, 2024
Alcohol – What’s the truth? Does your body go into shutdown if you consume alcohol as Dave Asprey recently stated in this Instagram post.
There is truth in the fact that alcohol is a toxin and it’s a toxin to the brain and the body has to clear it. But should it be so demonized that it is to blame for Alzheimer’s, Heart Disease, Diabetes and Cancer?
Like most things, whether it be nutrition, movement or alcohol, we encourage you to be your own experiment. Some alcohol suits some better than others; some can handle one or two, others none. It’s the same wath coffee. Tune into how your body responds and choose accordingly. Be your own experiment.

100NO 578: Longevity Wars
Monday Apr 29, 2024
Monday Apr 29, 2024
Following a recent instagram post by Dan Buettner who introduced a medical doctor to rebut Dave Asprey’s claims about oats, we ask if we are about to see the longevity space erupt in war. We can’t be sure who is throwing the first grenade. Was it Dave Asprey or is it Dan Buettner?
Do we need to rush out and soak our oats for breakfast tomorrow to live to 100 and beyond? In our analysis of the Blue Zone diets, no other Blue Zone consumes oats regularly as part of their diet. If we look at Okinawa, they’re eating rice. If we look at Costa Rica, they’re having corn.
What we do know is that it’s not nutrition alone that helps people live a long life.
Despite us pitting longevity guru v longevity guru and the clickbait that we see daily, such conversations are raising people’s consciousness on what it takes to age well. Depending on how you want to approach longevity, we encourage you to find the model that best fits with your philosophy and then move in that direction.

100NO 577: Do Toxic Relationships Impact on Longevity?
Monday Apr 22, 2024
Monday Apr 22, 2024
In a recent article, the oldest woman on the planet, María Branyas Morera, 115, said that the key to longevity is to stay away from toxic people.
We know that the quality of relationships can have a large impact on the quality of our health but why do we often find ourselves in toxic situations, unable to step away? Do we get stuck because we can’t see a pathway out?
Regardless if the toxic relationship is with others, food, money, or family; the biggest question we have to ask ourselves is, is what we are putting up with worthy of what we want in our lives?
This episode discusses toxic relationships at length and acknowledges that often people don’t have the support in their lives to help them exit such a relationship. If this episode has triggered you, please have the courage to care about yourself enough to find your way out of the toxic situation. Organizations such as Rize Up, dedicated to supporting the many families affected by domestic and family violence, are able to help up.
In this episode we refer to a previous episode of 100 Not Out with Mario Martinez and his conversation around righteous anger. You can refer to episode 181 here.

100NO 576: From Giving to Others to Giving to Self with Anita Spehar
Monday Apr 15, 2024
Monday Apr 15, 2024
This week we welcome long time listener, first time guest Anita Spehar onto the podcast.
From working 10+hour days, 7 days a week to now traveling solo in her motorhome, Anita recognised that for much of her life she had been giving to others – from work to family and everything in between – and decided that for the next 12 months, she needed to make her life about giving to herself.
The result? House sold. Motorhome purchased. Solo traveling around Australia, not to mention joining Damo and MP in both Ikaria and Sardinia on their upcoming 100 Not Out Longevity Experience. “Why wait for when you can’t do, do it while you can” is Anita’s new motto.
As Anita says, “if you feel like you’re missing out on something, get your boots on and do it!”
If you are like Anita, perhaps visiting Ikaria and Sardinia are on your must visit list of destinations to immerse yourself in the culture that epitomizes longevity and connection. If that is you, get your boots on and head over to 100notout.com to find out more. The groups are almost full (max group size 18).
We are in Ikaria from August 22-31 and Sardinia from September 1-10.

100NO 575: Are the Blue Zones Dead?
Monday Apr 08, 2024
Monday Apr 08, 2024
A question we are often asked is Are the Blue Zones Dead?
Settle in with a cuppa as we discuss whether, as the older people die, will we see the Blue Zones die with them? Or do we follow those that are now 80 and 90, with access to improved infrastructure and technology and see the impact that such things have on their own longevity?
Whether you think the Blue Zones are dead or alive, longevity remains as much about the top three things – purpose, engagement and movement as it is the avoidance of chronic disease.
Does the strong connection to rituals, land, family and food continue to hold those in the Blue Zones in good stead to continue on their longevity path and continuing to be our greatest teachers on what longevity is?
In this episode, we mention chronic diseases such as Dementia and Alzheimer’s and the impact that these have on longevity stats. We recommend you revisit episode 42 of 100 Not Out and our conversation around Dementia and Alzheimer’s with Professor Michael Woodward.

100NO 574: More Diet Propaganda
Monday Apr 01, 2024
Monday Apr 01, 2024
There certainly has been a theme in our recent episodes over the rise of social media as a way to educate and influence our health choices!
A friend of the podcast, David Wolfe who featured in episode 6 of 100 Not Out, recently shared a reel on his instagram account which resulted in over 900 shares and 730 comments.
This reel was not a ‘ how to boil a frog’ post but aimed at alarming the viewers that even when dead, animals feel pain too!
What type of impact are click bait reels having on people’s decisions when it comes to their own health? If you’ve watched the video, frog laksa might be off the menu at your place tonight!
Further to that, with the emergence of AI, how are we to determine what is true? Are we accepting information somewhat too easily, rather than doing our own research?
Join us as we discuss if the rise of health advice on social media and AI generated articles could swing the needle back in favor of our once trusted face to face relationship with our trusted GP or allied health practitioners.

100NO 573: Is Ageing Amazing?
Monday Mar 25, 2024
Monday Mar 25, 2024
Is Ageing Amazing? We certainly think so!
In the media and around the water cooler, you’ll hear plenty of talk on the negativity of ageing.
Do you disqualify yourself from ageing well or do you embrace it?
Do you look at ageing well from a vanity perspective or from what you are still able to do?
It’s often said that we are living longer, but dying slower. Are you too busy to work on how you want to age? Too busy to move? Too busy to eat well? Too busy to embrace your community? Too busy to spend time doing what you love? What is it that you are doing today to help you embrace the ethos that ageing is amazing?
For many, the end is very long. Certainly not for Bill Stevens who, at 95 years young, is still teaching water aerobics at his local gym and inspiring many. You can catch his recent appearance on Nine News Melbourne here. You can also be re-inspired by our chat with Bill on episode 220 here.
Don’t buy into the lie that ageing isn’t amazing! Be amazing with us in Ikaria and Sardinia! We are in Ikaria August 22-31 and Sardinia September 1-10. If you would like to join us, don’t put it off any longer. Head to 100notout.com today for all the information.
